TECUMSEH -- Teachers of USD 450 Shawnee Heights were surprised Friday with grants from the Shawnee Heights Public Schools Foundation. Members of the Foundation board toured the district to award more than $11,000 in grants for special projects.
“This is my favorite part of serving on the Foundation,” said Foundation President Liz Steffen. “No matter the size of the grant, the teachers are always so excited and so grateful to learn they were selected.”
The Foundation raises money annually to fund special projects through grants for teachers. Teachers must submit applications with a detailed description of what the funds will be used for, and a selection committee made up of Foundation members determines which grants get approved.
“This year a total of 20 teachers received grants totaling $11,500, withprojects ranging from flexible classroom seating to using STEM in Early Childhood Education to Game Design and Computer Programming,” said Steffen. “Every project has a direct impact on improving Shawnee Heights teachers and students. These grants give teachers opportunities to try new things. It keeps them excited to do their jobs and it gives students new ways to learn.”
